August Å enoa

August Šenoa ( born November 14, 1838 in Zagreb, † December 13, 1881 ) was a Croatian writer, critic, editor and playwright.

Life

August Šenoa was, at that time belonging to the Empire of Austria in 1838 in Zagreb, born into a family of German - Czech origin. His family name was originally written Schönoa. He studied law in Prague and Zagreb, but did not finish his studies. He also lived for a time in Vienna, but returned in 1866 returned to Zagreb, where he worked for some time as a notary and Senator in the city council was, moreover, he was Head of the State Theatre in Zagreb. He translated documents from English, Czech, French and German. He died in Zagreb at the age of 43 years. From 1874 to 1881 he edited the literary journal " Vijenac " (or as was written at the time: " Vienac " dt " wreath "). He was buried at the Mirogoj Cemetery in Zagreb.

Work

In his novels, he merged the vibrant and creative language of the Croatian national sentiment with a realistic description of the development of the petty bourgeoisie.

He is regarded as the "father of the Croatian novel" and the modern Croatian literature. Particularly impressive he describes in romanticized language crowd scenes (similar to Cecil B. DeMille ) and the struggle of the Croatian peasants and nobles against the foreign rule of the Venetians, Austrians and Hungarians in the 15th to 18th centuries. They say Šenoa had created by his folksy writing style, the Croatian audience.

Works

He was a transitional phenomenon that helped to bring the Croatian literature from romanticism to realism, and he introduced the historical novel in Croatia. He wrote more than ten novels, among which the most notable are:
