August Victor Paul Blüthgen

August Victor Paul Blüthgen ( born July 25, 1880 in Mühlhausen / Thuringia, † September 2, 1967 in Naumburg ) was a German jurist and entomologist.

Life

Paul Blüthgen was born in Mühlhausen / Thuringia, the son of a classical scholar. After graduation he studied law in Marburg and Berlin. In 1901 he was clerk and assessor in 1906. In 1913 he took over the post of district judge in Rügenwalde, however, had to do in the First World War in Körlin at the Persante and in Stolp. In 1920 he became a judge at the Regional Court of Naumburg and joined in 1928 as a High Court Judge to the Court of Appeal. Blüthgen changed with this court in 1945 to Halle (Saale ), where he was temporarily President of the Senate. At the age of 69 years, he retired in 1950 at his own request from the civil service.

Since his childhood Blüthgen dealt with insects, especially with Stechimmen. In his spare time, and especially on vacation he carried out intensive research in this field. To entomological topics Blüthgen published over 200 scientific papers. He became the world's recognized experts, including in the field of wild bees. In 1950 he was appointed correspondent of the Natural History Museum in Vienna. In the same year he was awarded an honorary doctorate for his contribution to the entomology of the Martin -Luther- University Halle- Wittenberg. The German Entomological Society awarded him in 1964 Fabricius Medal.
