Auguste Pavie

Auguste Pavie ( born May 31, 1847 in Dinan, † May 7, 1925 in Thourie, Ille -et -Vilaine ) was a French explorer and diplomat.

Pavie was in Cambodia since 1875, and gained there -depth knowledge of the customs and traditions as well as the Cambodian language. Between 1879 and 1895 he led a group of about 40 people who roamed as La Mission Pavie, on the Mekong through Laos and Cambodia as well as by Tonkin, Annam and southern China. They did this ethnographic studies and mapped the area to prepare a telegraph line from Phnom Penh to Bangkok. In addition, it also led book about the natural resources of the countries visited.

Pavie initiated the mission also founded in 1885 cambodgienne, the predecessor of the École coloniale, which laid the foundation for the training of administrators for the French colonial empire.

Since 1887 Pavie was a French vice-consul in Luang Prabang, until he was appointed in 1892 as the French ambassador to Bangkok. There he worked for France with the negotiations with the French annexation of Laos and parts of Cambodia. Towards the end of the 19th century Pavie negotiated with China on the border with Laos.

Auguste Pavie died on 7 May 1925 in Thourie, Dependance Ille -et -Vilaine.
