Prince August Ludwig of Anhalt- Köthen ( born June 9, 1697 in Köthen; † August 6, 1755 ) was a reigning prince of Anhalt- Köthen from the family of Ascanians.

Life

August Ludwig was the third son of Emanuel Lebrecht and his morganatic wife Gisela Agnes of Rath, since 1694 Countess of Nienburg. Because of Anhalt- Köthen since introduced in 1702 primogeniture he received from his older brother Leopold, the location, an exclave beyond Güsten, 1547 by George III. Built Castle and the country Warmsdorf with all income ( in the year 1715/16 there were 9,893, before 13,094 pounds) and other concessions as compensation.

In January 1722 he married his first ( morganatic ) married Agnes Wilhelmina of Wuthenau ( 1700-1725 ), which was raised in 1721 to the Countess of Warmsdorf. In January 1726, he married his second wife Emilie Countess of Promnitz ( 1708-1732 ), daughter of Count Erdmann II In November 1732 he finally married his third wife Countess Anna of Promnitz ( 1711-1750 ), the sister of his second wife. As a result of this marriage came the policy rule Pless in Upper Silesia in 1765 to the House of Anhalt- Köthen.

Once in 1728, his older brother, Prince Leopold and his only son had died, he followed as Leopold Prince of Anhalt Köthen and saw also the same with severe problems faced. Two "unfortunate runny " litigation with the widow of Leopold, Friederike Charlotte of Nassau- Siegen (1702-1785), who had sued their Wittumsgelder, and the daughter of Leopold from his first marriage, Gisela Agnes (1722-1751), which the inheritance of their father had demanded, bestowed the principality of a huge national debt.

For Charlotte Friederike had, despite remarriage, the Princely House and the Rentkammer to pay until her death in 1785 a total of 200,000 thalers. The capital value of all applied for Gisela Agnes services amounted to 335,000 rix-dollars. However, the debt service for loans taken and their consequences grew faster than the state budget, so that the debt mountain grew in a few years to three times a year taking the Principality. Both lawsuits are the causes of the high public debt of Köthener country, like a red thread through the history of the principality of Anhalt, where repayment was sought, but never reached.
