Aulerci

The Aulerci (German Aulerker ) were a Celtic people of Gaul.

The Aulerci populated the north-west of Gaul between the rivers Loire and Seine. Caesar mentions it as one of those people who lived by the sea and the ocean sailed. According to Livy included the Aulerci or her part tribe, the Cenomani, at the time of the legendary Roman king Lucius Tarquinius Superbus last a composite of strains, which was led by Ambicatus, the king of Bituriges. Livy reports that these tribes had recorded such a large population growth that they decided to emigrate to avoid overpopulation. So wandered Gauls, including a part of the Aulerci - Cenomani under Bellovesus across the Alps into Cisalpine Gaul and settled there.

The people of the Aulerci consisted of four sub- tribes:

  • A large part of Cenomani wandered - as mentioned above - over the Alps to Italy and settled there. The rest lived in Le Mans.
  • The Eburovices lived in the area of Évreux, northeast of Cenomani. Its main town, called Mediolanum Aulercorum. Her name means " yew fighters."
  • The Diablintes or Diablinti lived in the area around a town called Noviodunum, today Jublains.
  • The Brannovices had detached themselves from the main trunk and had become clients of the Aedui. The name can be translated as "Raven fighters."
