Austin FX3

Austin FX3 (1957 )

The Austin FX3 was a taxi, which was designed for use in British cities. It is often called London taxi, but was also used in other cities across the UK.

The FX3 was a top -driven 2.2 -liter gasoline engine R4 (from the Austin A70 ) and offered an all-steel body of Carbo this. It was built in the years 1948-1958. The first prototype of the FX3 with the registration number 841 JXN led his Test runs together with the FX2 with the approval number JXN 842. Later led subsequently available diesel engines from Perkins and standard the Austin Motor Company to develop its own diesel engine, which appeared in 1956 and slowly became the standard engine for the FX3. In the years 1957 and 1958 created a number of test vehicles equipped with automatic transmissions have, however, one of which survived only two.

Unlike other London taxis in the FX3 has no passenger door ( on the left ), so that is next to the driver an open space with increased vehicle floor, where a chest or other piece of luggage can be turned off. Below you will find the tool box of the car. The FX3 was very common; were built more than 7,000 copies, mostly for use in London, but a few hundred pieces went into other British cities. Soon after its introduction in 1948, he dominated the market and was a typical representative of the black London taxis.

1958, the FX3 was replaced by the FX4, but the old taxis remained after many years in use. 1997 highlighted the FX4 for the TX1 place.

The Austin FX3 is still maintained by collectors and enthusiasts of the London taxi scene. Many vehicles were also sent to the U.S. to serve there as collectibles, for hobby purposes or as an advertising vehicle.

A cinematic memorial to director Gerald Thomas the FX3 with the comedy Carry on - this weary taxi driver.
