Australian Goldfields Open

The Australian Goldfields Open are a professional snooker tournament. It is one of the tournaments of the main tour.

History

The Australian Masters or Masters Winfield, as it was originally called, began in 1979 as a TV event like the BBC Pot Black. Like its English counterpart, it was played on a single- frame basis and played in the final three frames. It was held " 10 TV Channel" in Sydney in the studios of.

In 1983 the format was changed to a 16- KO - round and in 1984, it then moved to the " Parramatta Club", also in Sydney. Tony Meo was the only player to have won the Masters twice and the Australian Ian Anderson was the first year of hosting the only home winner and has remained so to date.

In the course of further professionalization of the tour, it was difficult to attract top players and the tournament was discontinued after 1987 for the time being.

Already for the year 1989, a tournament in Australia was again provided. The Australian organizer of the World Professional Billiards appeared & Snooker Association ( WPBSA ) even during the preparations, however, as not professional enough, after the scheduled tournament was moved to Hong Kong.

On 23 May 2011 the WPBSA announced officially that in the season 2011/12 world ranking tournament in Australia would be held for the first time. Also for the following two seasons, the tournament is scheduled firmly on the main tour. This led the WPBSA continue on its chosen course in the previous year, the tournament calendar to expand other events and international venues.
