Australian Institute of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Studies

The Australian Institute of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Studies ( AIATSIS; "Australian Research Centre for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander " ) is an independent state authority under the jurisdiction of the Australian Federal Department of Innovation, Industry, Science and Research ( Department of Innovation, Industry, Science and research, DIISR ). It is the most important Australian institution for information about culture and lifestyle of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders. Its location is the Acton Peninsula in Canberra.

The Institute started its activity in 1961 as " Australian Institute of Aboriginal Studies " ( AIAS ). 1964 received the AIAS is a legal basis, in 1989 it was extended by law to AIATSIS.
