Currently, the length of the highway is approximately 271 km. When completed, the highway will be 477 km long. The A12 is at its entire course toll road and crosses the regions of Liguria, Tuscany and Lazio, and is part of the European route 80

History and development

On their way along the Tyrrhenian coast and the main road 1 Aurelia towards the south, the A12 connection to major cities and major port locations such as La Spezia, Livorno or Civitavecchia. Also for the tourism, the A12 has a very high priority, since they binds resorts like Carrara, Viareggio, Lucca, Cecina, Rapallo, Recco or Sestri Levante.

The northern section of the A12 Genova - Rosignano was built in three sections:

  • Genoa - Sestri Levante ( released August 2, 1969 )
  • Sestri Levante - Livorno ( released January 7, 1975 )
  • Livorno - Rosignano ( released July 3, 1993 )

The southern section Civitavecchia - Rome in 1967 after five years of construction, opened to traffic. This section was posted a long time as A16 until the number to the motorway Napoli - Canosa was awarded, after their completion.

The course of the A12 can be broken down into three sections:

Genova - Livorno

The A12 begins in Genoa, where they from the A7 Genoa - Milan branches. Along the Riviera di Levante them through numerous tunnels and bridges in the mountains near the coast of the Ligurian Sea. The A12 runs past the harbor locations Rapallo, Sestri Levante or near the Cinque Terre. In Santo Stefano di Magra it crosses the A15, La Spezia - Parma. This interchange is also the connection to La Spezia.

In its further course, it reaches Carrara Tuscany, where they continue passes near the sea in the cities of Massa, Viareggio and Pisa. At the junction Viareggio - simultaneously Camaiore branches a Autobahnast (Italian diramzione ) from the A11 to Lucca. (see A11/A12 )

13 km to the south crosses the A12 at junction Pisa - North A11 Pisa - Florence. At the exit Pisa centro, there is a connection to the SGC FI-PI- LI, which runs parallel to the A11 to Florence. In the Livorno Aurelia branches, the further south in turn leads as expressway through the city of Livorno and at the coast to Rosignano to the A12.

Livorno - Grosseto - Civitavecchia

Livorno - Cecina

Between junctions Livorno and Rosignano the motorway is about 15 km from the coast through the hinterland. On this section is, inter alia, the Viadotto Coltano that represents the longest road bridge in Italy with 9619 m. In Collesalvetti, another connection to the FI -PI -LI.

At the junction Rosignano M. ends coming from Livorno Aurelia.

In June 2012, the first 4 km between the junction Rosignano M. were opened ( the former end of the motorway ) and Cecina Nord. The most important building here was the construction of the toll booth Vada.

At the height of San Pietro in Palazzi the A12 merges into the Variante Aurelia / SS1.

Cecina - Tarquinia

This 200 km long section of the Autostrada Azzurra is currently not available. Plans that provide for closing this gap are already prepared and will be implemented from 2012, the total completion is planned for 2017.

The plans and the individual construction phases see at the moment is as follows:

The section between Cecina Nord and Grosseto will run exclusively on the route of the four-lane Aurelia, which will be for that purpose by or expanded. From Grosseto, a complete new building will take place. There will also be at the connection points no toll booths, as it otherwise on Italian motorways is the case (closed system). Rather, there should be seven toll stations in the course of the route on which the overdue fee is to be paid. Overall, the new or expansion of the motorway is expected to cost 3.6 billion euros.

Tarquinia - Civitavecchia ( Contract Section 6A)

The Construction of the 14 km long section of Civitavecchia - Tarquinia in the autumn of 2011 in the course of construction, two that rest stops ( Civitavecchia Ovest, Grotelle Est ), three connection points ( Civitavecchia Nord / new, " SS1 to " Tarquinia ) and the tollbooth. Tarquinia arise. ( - Places - Civitavecchia Terni) At the junction "SS1 until" later once the four-lane highway SS675 " Umbro - Laziale " to connect to the A12 and therefore the existing gap between Tuscania and Civitavecchia are closed. The tollgate Tarquinia also marks the end of the contract section 6A.

Civitavecchia - Rome ( Fiumicino)

North of Civitavecchia begins the second, South - section of the A12. Origin is a branch here with the SS 1 Aurelia and the SS 675 Civitavecchia - places. This stretch is entirely in the Italian region of Lazio. Again, the highway runs along near the coast. Near Fiumicino finally ends the A12 in the A91 - a ( GRA Rome Fiumicino Airport ).

More developments on the A12

In addition to the previously mentioned gap closure, two other projects are in the planning stage, namely the six-lane expansion between Sarzana and Viareggio / Camaiore. and the six-lane expansion between Torrimpietra and S. Marinella ( Lazio ) to 26.1 km.

Another befindliches planned construction project is the so-called Passante di Genova. However, the realization of which is uncertain due to the high cost of this major project.
