Avetrana

Avetrana is a municipality ( comune ) with 6964 inhabitants ( 31 December 2012) in the Italian province of Taranto in Apulia in the northern part of Salento.

The city lies on the ancient Via Appia Brindisi.

History

The area around Avetrana has been inhabited since the Neolithicum.

Attractions

  • " Torrione ", the remains of a castle, probably of Norman origin, probably built in 1050-1070 during the Norman domination in Puglia, but first detected in the sources since the 14th century.
  • " Chiesa Madre " built in 1743-1756 on parts of an older previous building, which was destroyed in an earthquake in Nardo in the first half of the 18th century.
  • " Palazzo Imperiali " at Largo Cavalarizza. The oldest parts of the palace are of pagan origin, it was extended by the family Albrizzi. The Imperial family expanded the palace in the 18th century around a wing. Located on the site are karst caves and archaeological sites.
  • In the field " Masseria della Marina" are the remains of a settlement and a burial place from the Neolithic period have been found ( 6th millennium BC), the findings have been backed up and explored by the " Superintendence archeologica " Appuliens and the University of Lecce. A permanent exhibition of the collection is shown in the casemates of Torrione since 2003.
  • The " Grotte di San Martino " on the Strada Provinciale to Torre Colimena contain evidence of a use by people from the Neolithic period until Roman times.
  • In San Francesco remains of a Roman villa have been excavated.
  • In " La Crava " examines the University of Rome La Sapienza, a fossil site.
