Avro 523 Pike

The Avro 523 Pike is a twin-engine biplane aircraft of the British manufacturer Avro.

History

The development of this aircraft was based on requirements of both the Royal Navy and the Flying Corps.

Intended applications of this for those times relatively large machine (the first twin-engined aircraft of Avro ), of which only two copies were made ​​in 1916, were the fight against enemy air ships, the long -range reconnaissance and short-range bombing missions sentences. The first flight of the first machine - called 523A - took place in November 1916.

Originally this aircraft was equipped with pressure propellers, but was converted to run on tractor propellers and already started in February 1917 in this embodiment.

The second aircraft - now called 523 - was identical to the previous machine, but with 160 hp engines of the type Sunbeam Nubian, water-cooled 8- cylinder V -90 aggregates.

However, since at that time the technology in the aircraft sector progressed very fast, the 523 was already obsolete at the end of their development period of more advanced types of aircraft and there was no mass production and no military use.
