Ayacucho (Region)

The Ayacucho Region (Spanish Región Ayacucho Quechua Ayakuchu suyu ) is a region in southern Peru. Covering an area of ​​43,815 km ² 619 522 people (2005 ). The capital is Ayacucho.

Geography

The Andes dominate the landscape; the average altitude is 2,761 meters above sea level. The highest mountain is the Sara Sara with 5,453 meters. The rivers Apurimac River and Río Mantaro cut through the land and provide on their shores for milder climate.

Population

More than three quarters of the population are indigenous and speak Quechua (variant Chanka ).

History

The region was founded on 15 February 1825 Departamento under Simón Bolívar.

The group Sendero Luminoso has its origin in the region and here is also the most widespread.
