Azamgarh (Hindi: आज़ामगढ़, Urdu: اعظم گڑھ; Azamgarh [a ː za ː mɡʌɽ ʱ ] ) is a city in the northern Indian state of Uttar Pradesh, with around 110,000 inhabitants ( 2011 census ). It lies on the banks of the River Tamsa ( clay ) around 90 kilometers north of Varanasi in Uttar Pradesh East and is the administrative seat of the district of Azamgarh and Azamgarh Division.

Azamgarh was founded around 1665, as Azam Khan, a convert to Islam Rajput prince who built a fort here. According to him, the city received its name ( garh means " fortress ").

Azamgarh is connected on the railway line from Shahganj by Mau on the railway network.
