Azanian People's Organisation

The Azanian People's Organisation ( AZAPO short; German about the organization azanianischen people ) is a political organization in South Africa. It refers to the philosophical principles of Steve Biko, Onkgopotse Tiro and Vuyelwa Mashalaba which during the Black Consciousness Movement (BCM ): created ( approximately movement for black self- consciousness). Currently, Mosibudi Mangena Party Chairman ( as of 2009).

During apartheid, the Azanian National Liberation Army ( AZANLA ) was the armed wing of the AZAPO.

The AZAPO was founded in 1978 out of three organizations: the Black People 's Convention (BPC ), the South African Students ' Organisation ( SASO ) and the Black Community Programmes ( BCP). These were among a group of BCM organizations that were banned for their participation in the armed resistance and the Soweto uprising of 16 June 1976. In October 1994, it merged with its sister organization operating in exile Black Consciousness Movement of Azania ( BCMA ).

On March 21, 1998, the Socialist Party of Azania ( SOPA ) split off from the AZAPO.

In the 1980s, the AZAPO was involved in a bloody confrontation with the now dominant party, the African National Congress ( ANC). Since then, the organization also tries as a political party and won the parliamentary elections in South Africa in 2004 a seat in the South African Parliament. This seat she defended in the parliamentary elections of 2009.
