Azorubine (also scarlet, E 122 ) is an approved as a food color red azo dye.

Azorubine is used for beverages, confectionery and sugar confectionery, marzipan, custard powder, Jelly, Fruit preserves, soups, finished products, brown sauce, bread crumbs, a coloring agent for tablets and more.

Azorubine has great chemical similarity with Amaranth (E 123) and as it is this substance suspected to act as an initiator of pseudo allergies.

Legal situation

Since July 21, 2010 Food that contain the azo dye must be labeled in the European Union with a separate warning, the text of which is: " Can the activity and attention in children affect ".
