Aztec Empire

The Aztec Triple Alliance was an alliance of city-states of Tenochtitlan, Texcoco and Tlacopan, which was closed by Itzcoatl of Tenochtitlan, Texcoco and Totoquilhuaztli Nezahualcóyotl, ruler of the small city-state Tlacopan in the year 1428.

Occasion of this tripartite alliance were the increasingly expansionist aspirations of Tepanecs under their ruler - and alleged usurper - Maxtla, who had, among other things Chimalpopoca, the tlatoani of Tenochtitlan, the Aztec capital murder and the besieged.

Within the Triple Alliance of Tenochtitlan held the dominant position. The subject provinces were governed centrally from Tenochtitlán from, divided the tribute payments under Tenochtitlan, Texcoco and Tlacopan for the key 5:3:1. The Aztec Triple Alliance formed the political basis of the later Aztec empire.
