Bacharuddin Jusuf Habibie ( born June 25, 1936 in Pare - Pare on Sulawesi, Indonesia) is an Indonesian scientists and politicians. He was 1998 and 1999 President over the years.

Career

Habibie was already known as a teenager with the late President Suharto. In 1954 he went on a scholarship to Germany and studied at the RWTH Aachen Aviation and aerospace engineering with a degree in Engineering 1960; he received his doctorate in the same place in 1965 with the distinction "summa cum laude". Following his college career, he moved to Messerschmitt -Bolkow -Blohm and there rose up to the Deputy Director General.

After his return in 1974 were made to Indonesia, he was appointed in 1978 by Suharto to the Minister of State for Research and Technology and was in this capacity his deputy. Prior to his work as a minister, he was by descent " chief " of his home region. On March 10, 1998, he was Vice President Suharto's resignation and after on 21 May 1998 the third President of Indonesia since independence.

Habibie, meanwhile appointed on 4 February 1988 Honorary Citizen of the RWTH Aachen, had little support among the population and in the army. His reforms - among other things he had free trade unions and free elections - not increased his popularity. So he resigned voluntarily in 1999 for reelection. As his successor, Abdurrahman Wahid was elected.
