B. K. S. Iyengar

BKS Iyengar ( Iyengar Bellur Krishnamachar Sundararaja; born December 14, 1918 in Bellur, Karnataka ) is the founder of Iyengar Yoga, a form of Hatha Yoga. Iyengar ordered the asanas systematically. He is regarded as one of the leading yoga teachers worldwide and practicing and teaching yoga now for over 75 years. He has written many books on practice and philosophy of yoga. His most famous works are " light on yoga ", "Light on Pranayama " and " Light on the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali ".

In 2004, Iyengar was named by Time Magazine as one of the 100 most influential people in the world.

Early years

BKS Iyengar was born on 14 December 1918 as the eleventh of thirteen children. The extended family Iyengar was impoverished, but belonged to the Brahmin caste. Due to a flu epidemic at the time of birth Iyengar was weak and sickly to the world. During his childhood he suffered from several diseases such as malaria, tuberculosis, typhoid fever, and general malnutrition. 1923 the family moved to Bangalore. His father was a teacher and died 1927.

At 15, he became a student of his future brother in law, the yogi T. Krishnamacharya in Mysore, where she learned the asanas. Soon, his condition improved and he was finally completely healed. At the suggestion of Krishnamacharya Iyengar 1937 went to Pune to teach yoga there. In many hours of daily exercises and experimental self-study various techniques he developed his unorthodox style. He improved his methods and thereby increased the number of its students and its reputation. International Recognition

His daughter Geeta and son Prashant are now internationally acclaimed teachers. In 2008 there were 49 countries in yoga studios under his name.

In 2002 he was honored with the Padma Bhushan.
