Baâlon

Baâlon is a commune of 275 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2011 ) in the department of Meuse in the Lorraine region. It belongs to the district of Verdun, the Canton Stenay and is a member of the local association, founded in 1999 Pays de Stenay.

Geography

The community Baâlon lies between the valleys of the Meuse and Chiers, about 35 kilometers southeast of Sedan and about 17 kilometers south-west of the border with Belgium.

Almost the entire southern half of its territory is covered by forest ( Bois du Chênois as part of the great Forêt de Woëvre ), another forest area is located in the north ( Bois de Malcuit ), while east of the village center is predominant arable and pasture land. By the Ruisseau de Baâlon community, a small stream, which rises in the Bois du Chênois and seeps back after a few hundred meters flows. He takes two and a half kilometers north-west, in the village Baâlon, light again and flows, several Stauweiher dining in Brouennes in the Meuse Creek Chiers.

Neighboring communities of Baâlon are Brouennes in the north, Quincy Landzécourt in the east, Juvigny -sur- Loison to the southeast, Mouzay in the south and in the west Stenay.

History

In the 19th century, found near Baâlon artifacts from Gallo-Roman times. Ceramics, a bronze statue and the remains of houses, shops and roads suggest a Roman camp, which was about in the 3rd century here.

At the church remembers a grave plate to the native of Scotland Family Maclot. Ferry Maclot, the last of the Lords of Baâlon died 1638th

In the 19th century the inhabitants were mainly engaged in agriculture, in addition, there were tanners, skinners, shoemakers, loggers and Weber, as well as a miller. Many women embroiderers as in the neighboring places Stenay and Mouzay. Between 1861 and 1891 a brewery was operated in the village. For the wine were soils and terrain around Baâlon - unlike in the nearby valley of the Meuse - not suitable.

Population

The population of Baâlon has remained almost constant since the late 1960s. To counteract the migration from rural areas, sustainable projects were realized in the community in recent years. Thus, a playground and an orchard including investing in municipal housing, created and renovated a party room.

Attractions

In the Church of St. Blaise ( Saint Blaise ) from the 18th century, there is a wrought iron arch that separates the choir from the nave, and a triptych with passion, crucifixion and resurrection of Christ.

Economy and infrastructure

In Baâlon today are only about ten employees in agriculture. Many residents commute to Stenay or to the nearby border triangle France -Belgium- Luxembourg. By 2004 Baâlon was a primary school site.

By Baâlon the highway leading from the Belgian Arlon about Stenay to Reims. Other roads connect Baâlon with neighboring communities Brouennes, Quincy Landzécourt and Mouzay.
