Babe is a municipality in the district of Bragança in the northeast of Portugal with 238 inhabitants ( 2011).

History

At the time of the Roman occupation of the site was situated on the road from oppidum Bracara Augusta (the modern Braga) to present-day Astorga, the then Asturica Augusta.

1387 here, the Treaty of Babe ( Tratado de Babe ) between the Portuguese king D. João I and was the John of Gaunt, 1st Duke of Lancaster, closed. In order to increase sealing of the Treaty of Windsor ( 1386 ) of the Duke of Lancaster his daughter Philippa of Lancaster D. João gave to wife, and she became Queen of Portugal. One of their children was Henry the Navigator.

Economy

Agriculture with olives and wine is crucial for the environment, also are small business trade, the construction industry and the catering settled here. The place suffers from brain drain, similar to many other similar places in the area.

Culture, Sports and Attractions

Noteworthy is the ethnographic museum (Museu Etnográfico Rural de babe ) with the estate of Dr. Belarmino Afonso. Also worth visiting are the Manueline main church and the various chapels and fountains.

2012 organized the community Babe in the third year the Dia do Desporto (German: Sports Day ), be practiced at the next soccer and futsal also a number of local, traditional games.
