Băbească neagră

The red variety Babeasca NEAGRA is an indigenous variety from Romania. It is cultivated in Romania, Moldova and Ukraine.

The high-yielding variety with its large grape produces fruity red wines, which are mainly grown from the area around Nicoreşti ( Galaţi ) in Romania. Currently about 2,340 hectares under vine are known worldwide.

From the variety is the graubeerige Babeasca Grise mutated. It was discovered in 1975 in Romania by employees of the Institute of Odobeşti.

Ampelographic varietal characteristics

In the ampelography the habit is described as follows:

  • The shoot tip is open. It is not hairy and slightly glossy.
  • The large leaves are roundish, five-lobed and not sinuate. The petiole is U- shaped. The leaves are sharply toothed.
  • The grape is large and loose-. The roundish berries are small and nearly black color.

Babeasca neagra is a variety of the noble vine (Vitis vinifera ). It has hermaphrodite flowers and is thus self- fruiting. When the wine-growing economic disadvantage is avoided, no return delivered to have male plants grow.
