Babócsa

Babócsa (Croatian Bobovec ) is a municipality in the small area Barcs, located in southwest Hungary in Somogy county. It is situated in the river Drau Rinya, five kilometers from the Croatian border and has about 1600 inhabitants.

The chronicles mention a castle in Babócsa in 1450. These was occupied by the Turks in 1555 without hostilities. Thus the castle was one of the few castles in Hungary which has been conquered by treachery.

In the eastern part of the settlement is the Basa - Garden ( Basakert ), which was probably built by the Ottomans. During the months of April and May here unfolds the bloom of star - daffodils. The area is a nature reserve.

From the station, a marked trail on the Meru forest leads past as well as the Elizabeth Island, a habitat for rare birds that can be observed from a control room. There are information boards describing the flora and fauna of lowland forests.

History

The first finds this area date from the Copper and Bronze Ages. In the Gothic period as well as during the Ottoman occupation period, the settlement seems to have been settled. In the nature reserve Bakert are the reconstructed ruins of St. Aegidiuskapelle. Here the remains of a Turkish bath could be exposed.

A Turkish fountain located in the park of the in 1820 built in the classical style castle built Somssich. The home club has set up in the small Prinke lock a local museum.

The former thermal bath is no longer in operation. The Légrádi - board ( Kossuth utca ) is a guest house with accommodation, also there is a hunting lodge ( Szabadság tér ). Through the town also runs a bike path the international bicycle tour of the three rivers. The people here are mostly agricultural workers.
