Babylonian Map of the World

The Babylonian world view is shown on the presumably originating from clay tablet from Sippar spätbabylonischer time, which is dated to 700-500 BC and now in the British Museum (Cat. No. 92687 ). It shows a flat earth surrounded by water, through which the Euphrates flows. The Babylonians were the Upper and Lower Sea known since the Assyrian campaigns by Urartu and the Van Lake / Lake Urmia (Sea of Nairi ), and after the conquest of Egypt, the Red Sea.

The general idea of the country surrounded by the sea got up in the Greek time (eg in Anaximander of Miletus, Hecataeus of Miletus ).
