Badia Fiorentina

The Badia Fiorentina ( Italian for " Florentine Abbey " ) is a medieval abbey church in the city center of Florence, which essentially dates from the late 13th and early 14th century in its present form.

According to the descriptions of the Vita Nova Dante Alighieri wants the Beatrice Portinari seen in the Badia for the first time.

Architectural History

It was founded as a monastery of the Benedictine Order 978. Since 1071 a hospital was part of the system. The building was rebuilt 1284-1310 under the supervision of Arnolfo di Cambio in the forms of Gothic and received 1310-1330 its characteristic tower. The Cloister degli Aranci ( Cloister of the Orange Trees ) was added from 1432 to 1438 by Bernardo Rossellino. He is provided with a cycle of frescoes by Giovanni di Consalvo. The main entrance was designed by Benedetto da Rovezzano. In the 17th century the church was partially rebuilt in the Baroque style.

Equipment

In-room amenities include frescoes by Giovanni Domenico Ferretti in the choir room. Paintings of famous painters are Apparizione della Madonna a San Bernardo ( " Apparition of the Virgin of St. Bernard " ) by Filippino Lippi and Assunta e due Santi ( " The sky propelled Virgin and Two Saints " ) by Giorgio Vasari. The church houses besides other works of art, two grave monuments for Bernardo Giugni and the Marquis Hugo of Tuscany by Mino da Fiesole.
