BAE Batterien

The BAE Batteries GmbH (formerly: Akkumulatorenfabrik -Aktiengesellschaft ( AfA) ), based in Berlin- Oberschoeneweide manufactures in Berlin batteries and accumulators since its founding in 1899. For current product range mainly include rechargeable batteries for industrial trucks, rail vehicles, IT, Solar, Telecom, UPS and stationary equipment. The company operates in over 80 countries.

History

Towards the end of the 19th century in the former Berlin suburb Oberschoeneweide numerous complete industrial plants. In 1895 the AEG founder Emil Rathenau to industrialize the wet meadows in Oberschoeneweide. 1899, the first factory buildings of the new Akkumulatorenwerke Oberspree AG were built by the company for electrical enterprises and manufactures portable batteries and batteries. Renowned architects received large orders for the construction of the factory complex. This created directly on top Beautiful Weider residential area a plant in the historicist style for the production of lead-acid batteries on behalf of AEG. Almost at the same time also began Werner von Siemens and Adolph Müller in Hagen with the production of these interconnected galvanic elements.

In 1904 the foundation of the sales company VARTA GmbH was (sales, charging, repair of portable batteries ). 1905 took over the factory Accumulatoren Aktiengesellschaft (AFA ) of businessman Gustav Quandt the factory and started manufacturing portable lead-acid batteries for use in torches, telegraphic and electrical signal devices. From the 1920s came starter batteries for cars added. Production has been continued successfully until the 1940s.

After the end of the Second World War, the factory owners were expropriated, the company transformed into a Soviet- German Aktiengesellschaft ( SDAG ). You now produced almost exclusively flashlights and batteries for the needs of the Red Army. From the 1950s the ownership of the newly founded GDR and now put batteries and accumulators for internal trade in large range of application both for household appliances as well as for technical systems ago. The flashlight and accessories production was continued under the new name Belfa ( Cell and battery - factory). The BAE soon became the largest producer of batteries and accumulators in the GDR. Administratively, it existed in the 1960s, a collection of several companies in the electrical industry to a VVB named cable installation equipment (better known as IKA), which also includes the BAE was come. After the conversion of VVB in large capacity production in the late 1970s, the BAE products were sold under the new brand sales organization AKA electric.

The German reunification led to a change of ownership in the form of a limited liability company, it was the BAE GmbH. The management agreed a license production for the VARTA AG, but earned no profits. Through a management buy-out from East Berlin factory directors and industry insiders, the company could be saved from closure in 1993. The new management tried to specialize in batteries for railway vehicles and forklift trucks, but that was also not successful in the long term leader. In 2005, a new investor was sought by tender, the Dutchman Jan IJspeert had found for the takeover. He brought as a business professional with a good knowledge and contacts and secured inter alia, the financing of the company. As of 2007, he now acts as Managing Director, while maintaining the historic company name.

Production halls, administration buildings and premises

Are obtained from the first phase of construction in the 1890s, the administration building and the main entrance of the factory premises at the Wilhelminenhofstraße 68 and 69 and a single hall on the grounds. In the 1920s, a new single-storey factory building was built as a clinker - building with four rectangular entrance gates, designed by Bruno book along Ostendstrasse 30-33. The tract has a total length of 125 meters, which is divided into 26 axes to three rows of windows. Cantilevered bands and a wide cornice to emphasize the horizontal. He is finished with a hipped gable roof. In GDR times, administrative and social buildings were newly built on the premises.

In 1991 the original premises ( approximately 180 m × 200 m tall ) was scaled to an important piece that fell into the administration of the Senate of Berlin. The Environment Department was tasked with ground surveys, which showed an enormous load of soil and groundwater: Lead concentrations around 40 g per kg soil and 9000 micrograms VOCs ( Volatile chlorinated hydrocarbons such as tetrachloroethene or vinyl chloride, which served as a cleaning agent ). The pollutants were also penetrated into groundwater. With great financial ( 3.6 million euros ) and mechanical input to the 2000 renovations were carried out. This included the replacement of the contaminated soil, isolate, commissioning unloaded wells and the establishment of a level measuring branch network and a groundwater purification plant. The old listed industrial buildings are being restored since the late 1990s.

Motive Power

  • Batteries for industrial trucks
  • Batteries for railway vehicles

Special Applications

  • Batteries for safety-related applications
  • Batteries for special systems
  • Batteries for special vehicles

The main products IJspeert see that besides Trakionsbatterien low-maintenance and maintenance-free stationary batteries for the growing needs of the computer industry and the solar industry: there are ultra-modern and efficient UPS systems or decentralized small power plants developed as a fitting in a container wind small power plant. These are offered partners in Germany and other countries for the electrification of remote areas and operators of server systems. The development of sophisticated storage technologies with the help of renewable energy sources is on the agenda. The production of batteries for industrial trucks and rail vehicles will initially continue. With the profits of the old factory buildings and equipment will be gradually modernized, a growing is planned.

Commitment to the German capital

The company BAE batteries is a participant in the Be Berlin - the capital campaign " Ich bin ein Berliner " presents the outstanding industrial products from the different areas of the industrial location in Berlin.
