Baetis is an insect genus from the order of mayflies ( Ephemeroptera).

Characteristics of the adult bees

Males possess turban eyes.

Features of the larva

The brownish-colored body is up to 9 millimeters long, narrow and not flattened. The head is perpendicular compared to the body axis. The eyes are located laterally on the head. The antennae are much longer than the head is wide. Short mandibles not project beyond the front edge of the head also. The shape of the thorax is arched high and strong. The legs are strong. On the last segment of the abdomen no lateral spines are present. The terminal has thread on both sides of a hair on the other hand, Cerci only on the inner sides. A dark zone on the tail threads does not exist. The seven pairs of tracheal gills are simple and oval.

Occurrence and life

The species of the genus Baetis are floating forms. Their habitat are both mountain streams and slow moving water bodies in the plane. If they are disturbed they move through impact with the back of her body by jumping. Their diet consists of detritus and filamentous algae. The female imagos lay their eggs under water. The generation time is one year.
