Bahiret el Bibane

Bahiret el Bibane (Arabic بحيرة البيبان ) is a lagoon in the southeast of Tunisia in the governorate Medenine.

It is located about 10 km north of the city of Ben Gardane and 20 km south of the city of Zarzis. It covers an area of ​​230 square kilometers. The dunes on the Spit reach a height of up to 10 meters. The length of the water is 32 km, it is up to 10 km wide and average depth of 4 m. There are several passages to the Mediterranean, the longest of these channels is 800 m wide.

The wetlands of the lagoon is a nature reserve under the Ramsar Convention. It is spawning area of Mediterranean fish and resting place of a number of species of birds, among other pink flamingo, cormorant and Crane, widgeon, pintail and shoveler, Large and Whimbrel, Schwarzkopf, minke and black-headed gull.
