Baia de Aramă

Baia de Arama (Hungarian Arámabánya ) is a town in the district Mehedinţi in Romania.

Location

Baia de Arama is located in the Lesser Wallachia, on the south side of the Mehedinţi Mountains, a mountain range of Retezat Mountain Godeanu group. The county town Drobeta Turnu Severin is located about 45 km south.

History

The territory of the city has been inhabited for a long time. Already Scythians and Romans mined in the surrounding mountains for copper. West of the town Dacian coins were discovered.

The Baia de Arama current name is documented since 1836. Literally it means " copper mine ". Around this time there was an intense in the area, several decades lasting reduction of copper ore. In the 19th century the town was dominated by the noble families Hergot and Glogoveni.

In the years 1951 to 1968 Baia de Arama was within the former administrative division of Romania seat of a Rajons. 1968, the site was declared a city.

The main industries are agriculture (especially cattle breeding and fruit growing ), the timber production and trade.

Population

As of the 2002 census, 5,648 inhabitants were counted in the city, including 5,524 Romanians and 122 Roma. Approximately 2,200 Baia de Arama lived in himself, the others in the eight incorporated villages.

Traffic

Baia de Arama has no rail connection. Through the city along the national road runs 67 D Baile Herculane after Târgu Jiu. Regular bus services in the latter city.
