Baia de ArieÈ™

Baia de Aries (deprecated Ofenbaia or Baia; German Offenburg, hungarian Aranosbánya ) is a city in Alba county in Romania with 5061 inhabitants ( 1992). It is located on Aries - a right Zuflufluss the Mureş ( Maros ) - which is ( among other Gold) also called Gold River due to its high mineral content.

The place is also known by the German names Umberg, Onimberg, swidden castle, swidden and Castle Castle and the Hungarian Offenbánya and Kupecbánya.

History

Baia de Aries was mentioned in a document I of Hungary Charles for the first time in 1325. At the beginning of the 15th century, the city got city rights, but later lost it again. Until 1920, the city remained in Hungarian ownership until it was given by the Treaty of Trianon, together with all of Transylvania to Romania. Only in 1998 was Baia again the status of a city.

Economy

Until the year 2004 was the site of the center of the metal, arsenic, and pyrite promotion, who was also known for its gold deposits. The first Transylvanian Saxons have then found gold in the mountains and in the river Aries. Due to the depletion of natural resources, the mine was closed.
