Baía Formosa

Baía Formosa (Eng. Beautiful bay, so named in 1612 by Portuguese ) is the southernmost coastal city of the State of Rio Grande do Norte in northeastern Brazil. It was in 1958 independently as Munizip and has 8,128 inhabitants ( 2004) on an area of 246 km ². To the capital Natal in the north is about 100 km, up to João Pessoa in the south about 120 km.

Almost all the inhabitants live in the still quiet fishing village, the area is lonely, to the north is within 10 kilometers of undeveloped, south to the village of Sagi at the border to neighboring Paraíba even 15 miles: a rarity in Brazil, where sandy coasts opened up almost everywhere are. Dolphins come to within a few meters of the shore. Baía Formosa still radiates the traditional tranquility of, in spite of the first B & Bs on the cliff at the edge of the town center. A few kilometers inland is the entrance to a private nature reserve Mata Estrela with the last 20 km ² pristine coastal forest ( Mata Atlântica ) of the State and a lake, the Lagoa da Araraquara that because Coca Cola is named because of its color and Lagoa. The hinterland is otherwise determined by extensive sugar cane plantations. In addition to the cliffs of the old fishing cemetery is worth seeing.
