Bairro Alto

The Bairro Alto [' bajʀu aɫtu ] to German Upper Town, a suburb of the Portuguese capital Lisbon, located above the business district of Baixa (Lower Town ) is located. The southern end is located at the Praça Luís de Camões. To the west it is bounded by the Rua do Século and ( north- ) east through the Rua da Misericordia / Rua Dom Pedro V. The political administration is carried out by the Junta de Freguesia of Misericordia.

Large parts of the Upper Town were spared in the disastrous earthquake of 1755. Previously, the district was mostly inhabited by craftsmen and ordinary employees. In the 19th century, the editors and printers (including Diário de Notícias and O Século ) settled the most important newspapers of the city in the district. In the course of technical development of the paper rolls were larger for the pressure, which complicated their transportation in the narrow streets. Most newspapers covered therefore in other areas of the city. Today only the football newspaper A Bola has its editorial offices in the Bairro Alto. With the newspapers many intellectuals came to the district. Today it attracts, because of the high rents and costs for buying a home, more and more prosperous, for the most part young people here.

The Bairro Alto is the nightlife of the city. In the narrow streets are a wide variety of bars and restaurants rub. Traditional Tasca (pubs ) in which fado is played for tourists and locals, chic new clubs and bars, old and new pubs. The Lisbon like to go out and party a lot and start a happy evening in the Bairro Alto. Especially in the Rua do Norte and Rua da Rosa there are many small shops specializing in clothing, accessories, CDs, etc.

Much of the area is closed to general traffic. The access is allowed there only for residents. You can reach the Bairro Alto but with the metro ( subway station Baixa -Chiado ), with the line 28E of Eléctrico (stop Praça Luís de Camões ) and with the Ascensor da Glória.
