Baix Empordà

The comarca of Baix Empordà (Spanish: Bajo Ampurdán; German: Niederampurien ) is located in the province of Girona of the Autonomous Community of Catalonia (Spain). Baix Empordà was created in 1936 from the southern part of the historic county of Empordà ( German: Empordà ). The community association has an area of 702 km ² and 132 973 inhabitants (2009 ).

Location

The community association is located in the extreme east of Catalonia, it is bordered on the north by the comarca of Alt Empordà ( German: Alt Empordà ), on the west by Gironès, to the south by Selva and on the east by 78 km long coastline of the Mediterranean. Together with the Comarcas Alt Empordà, Garrotxa, Gironès, Pla de l' Estany, Selva and Ripollès forms the region 's territory Comarques giro ines.

Baix Empordà on the Costa Brava. The northern part of the comarca is located in a traversed by the lower reaches of the Ter level. Climate

The climate is Mediterranean - hot, dry summers and moderately cold winters. The highest amounts of precipitation are in the spring and fall. In these seasons, it is also common to strong, cold winds from the north, the Tramontana.

Economy

The main industry on the coast is tourism. By the rivers of intensive irrigated agriculture takes place, are grown corn, fruit and alfalfa. In areas with dryland grain and feed are cultivated. In the woodworking industry, among other furniture is produced. Also, a significant food and metal processing industry are available.
