Baiyankamys

Baiyankamys is a rodent species from the group of Altweltmäuse ( Murinae ). The genus includes two species. Until recently, the animals nor the swimming rats ( genus Hydromys ) have been assigned.

These animals can reach a body length 13-16 centimeters and additionally there is a 15 to 19 centimeters long tail. Their fur is predominantly gray colored, the tail ends in a white tip.

They are native to New Guinea, their habitat is mountainous forests up to 3600 meters above sea level. They live near rivers and streams. In the water, they also hunt their food, such as fish and insects.

There are two types:

  • Baiyankamys Habbema is known only from a small area in the Indonesian part of New Guinea, the type could but are more prevalent than previously known.
  • Baiyankamys shawmayeri inhabited large parts of eastern New Guinea. The species is widespread and not in danger.
