Bajo Aragón

Bajo Aragón ( katalan. Baix Arago to German Niederaragonien ) is a Comarca (administrative unit ) of the Aragon Autonomous Community in Spain. It is located in the northeast of the province of Teruel and has an area of 1,304 km ² 26 853 inhabitants. The capital is Alcaniz, the largest of the 20 associated municipalities.

The Comarca was created in 2003 when the original Comarca Matarraña was divided into the Comarcas Matarraña, Bajo Aragón and Bajo Aragón - Caspe. The Bajo Aragón is bordered to the west by the Comarcas Bajo Martín and Andorra -Sierra de Arcos, in the north of Bajo Aragón - Caspe, to the east by the Comarca Matarraña and on the south by the province of Castellón and the Comarca Maestrazgo.

For cultural heritage of the province belongs to the architectural ensemble of the capital Alcaniz, to which, inter alia, a castle of the 12th century, a covered market or commodity market ( Lonja ) in the Gothic style, the town hall in Renaissance style and the Baroque collegiate church belong. Some of the places - especially Calanda - belong to the Ruta del Tambor, known for their distinctive drum processions in Holy Week.

The most famous son of the comarca is the film director Luis Buñuel, who was born in Calanda.
