Bakio

Bakio (Spanish: Baquio ) is a municipality in the province of Biscay in the Spanish Basque Country.

Geographical location

Bakio is located in a valley through which the river flows Estepona. Towards the east, south and west, the valley is bounded by mountain ranges in the north, however, the valley opens to the Cantabrian Sea. The nearest communities are Bermeo in the east, Munguia in the south and Maruri and Lemoniz in the West.

History

The municipality was formerly Basigo de Baquio and the municipal seat of that name still. In 1927, the towns of San Pelayo (San Pelaio ) and was incorporated Zubiaur who belonged up to that time, the neighboring village of Bermeo. Although the community is located just off the coast and its foundation goes back to the run of fishing, Bakio has always been characterized by its agriculture. This is due to the temperate microclimate with little snowfall and frost. This favors the cultivation of vines and the production of the Basque wine txakolí. In the recent past Bakio has increasingly turned to tourism.
