Balaka is a city in the south of Malawi. It lies 600 meters above sea level and is a fast growing economic center with 14,298 inhabitants ( 1998). Balaka is capital of the district, which has an area of ​​2193 km ² and 253 098 inhabitants. Balaka is conveniently located on the paved roads in Blantyre - Zomba - Lilongwe Dedza and Zomba Chipoka - Salima and on the railway line Blantyre - Lilongwe Chipoka. 12 km south is the branch Nkaya the Mozambican port of Nacala.
