Balakan District
Balakən (also Balakan ) is a rayon in the northwestern Azerbaijan. Capital of the district is the city Balakən. The rayon bordered to the north Dagestan, in the west and southwest Georgia.
Geography
The rayon has an area of 994 km ². The landscape is part of the southern flank of the Greater Caucasus and is about 300 m above sea level. There are large walnut forests. Parts of the region belong to Zagatal National Park.
Population
The rayon in 2009 had about 89,500 inhabitants. Of these, 72.7 % Azerbaijanis, 21.4% Avars, 2.9% Georgians, 2.6% Ukrainians and Russians Garachi as well. It is spoken mainly Azerbaijani, but also Avar. 95% of the population is Muslim.
Economy
The region is dominated by agriculture. There is grain, cultivated corn, tobacco and nuts, as well as bred cattle. There is also a food processing industry, especially dairies.

Traffic
At the village Postbina on the border with Georgia, there is a border crossing. There is a regular bus service between the city and the Georgian Balakən Kabali, as well as to Baku and Zaqatala.
