Baldramsdorf is a municipality with 1873 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2013 ) in the district of Spittal an der Drau in Carinthia.

Geography

Geographical location

The community Baldramsdorf lies a few kilometers west of the district capital Spittal an der Drau. The municipality occupies the southern part of the Lurnfelds and extends from the Goldeck to Drava.

Neighboring communities

History

The places Baldramsdorf and Gschiess were first mentioned in a deed from the year 1166, the Ortenbourg was first mentioned in 1093. From the end of the 12th century was Baldramsdorf as well as the neighboring settlements to the 15th century belonged to the county Ortenbourg. With the construction of the castle Porcia Spittal in the castle lost its importance and fell into ruin.

Hannibal Alphons Prince of Porcia founded in 1710 by Father castle as Hieroymitenkloster to combat secret Protestantism; in the buildings of the now- abandoned monastery the first Carinthian Craft Museum was opened in 1977.

Baldramsdorf was an independent municipality in 1851, ten years later temporarily incorporated into the greater community of Spittal until they regained the independence in 1886.

Population

According to 2001 census Baldramsdorf has 1,819 inhabitants, of which 97.9 % are Austrian citizens. 85.0 % of the population are Roman Catholic and 7.5 % for the Protestant Church, 0.9% are Muslim faith. 5.3% is no religious persuasion.

City Council and Mayor

The local council of Baldramsdorf has 15 members and is composed as follows since the municipal elections in 2009 together:

  • 6 FPK
  • 2 ÖVP

Directly elected mayors is Henry Gerber ( SPÖ).

Coat of arms

The right to bear a coat of arms was awarded to the community on August 8, 1966 on the occasion of its 800th anniversary of the first mention. The coat of arms shows a golden angel wings on blue background, dating back to the coat of arms of the Counts of places castle, which showed three angel wings.

On the origin of the emblem is a legend handed down. According to this had to be a young count a pilgrimage to the Holy Land take and bring a sacred memento as a token of love to marry a countess allowed. He also brought a chip from the cross of Christ, but this was lost on the voyage across the sea in a storm. He returned to the Countess now sadly back and wanted her to confess his failure, as she showed him the chip. This was a messenger - who was regarded as an angel - brought. Then they married and founded the village of Spanheim. From the clamping Heimern turn the Ortenburgers emerged.
