Baldwin de Redvers, 1st Earl of Devon

Baldwin de Redvers, 1st Earl of Devon (also Baldwin de Revières, 1st Earl of Devon, † June 4, 1155, buried in Quarr Abbey ) was the son of Richard de Redvers and Adeline Peverel.

Life

He was one of the first nobles who rebelled against the English King Stephen, and the only senior magnate who never accepted him. He tore Exeter itself, plundered from the Isle of Wight as a pirate, and was eventually expelled from England. In Anjou, he joined the Empress Matilda, the latter after they had been established in England, probably made ​​for the Earl of Devon early 1141.

He founded several monasteries, especially Quarr Abbey ( 1131 ) on the Isle of Wight, Breamore Priory ( Hampshire) and the Priory of St James in Exeter. He was buried in Quarr Abbey.
