Baley

Balei (Russian Балей ) is a city in the region, the Trans-Baikal (Russia) with 12,533 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010 ).

Geography

The city lies on the southern flank of here almost 1200 meters high Borschtschowotschnygebirges in Transbaikalia, about 350 km east of the regional capital of Chita, the river Unda, a right tributary of the Onon.

The city is Balei the region administratively subordinated directly and also the administrative center of the homonymous Rajons.

Balei is connected by road with the 55 km northern station Priiskowaja ( at Nertschinsk ) of the Trans-Siberian Railway and has a small airport.

History

In the 19th century, was built on site of the present city of the gold panners settlement Nowotroizkoje, gold production began in 1858. 1938, the place under the present name of a town. 1947 was the most significant gold deposit in the region, Tassejewskoje, discovered to their exploitation of the prisoners then decorated Baleilag were used in the system of the Gulag.

Economy

Balei is center of gold mining with multiple shafts, mining and enrichment plant. Since 2004, the deposit is being exploited with the participation of the Canadian Barrick Gold.
