History

The origin of the Balinesenkatzen is not in Bali or other parts of Indonesia. The breed is not a naturally occurring breed of cat but caused by intensive farming. As a cross between long-haired Siamese and Angora cats the first specimens were registered in the early 1920s, even as a " longhaired Siamese ". Because long-haired copies the breed characteristics of the Siamese adulterated, it was a long time not used for breeding, but sold as house cats or killed. Only when the two U.S. breeder Marion Dorsey of California and Helen Smith of New York in the 1950s Balinesenkatzen began to breed for profit, the public acceptance of change.

The name goes back to Smith's subjective feeling, the cats would remind her smooth gait and beauty of Balinese temple dancers. Longhaired Siamese cat was too bulky name for such graceful animals. Since the new naming the popularity of the breed grew, so more and more breeders began, " perfecting " the Balinese to. Today there are two types of Balinese: Traditional and modern Balinese.
