Baltic University

The Baltic University was an exile University of the Baltic States. It was founded in the postwar period for refugees from Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania in Hamburg (1946 /47) and Pinneberg ( 1947-1949 ).

History

The university was established in March 1946 in Hamburg in the British occupation zone. This helped the United Nations Relief and Rehabilitation Administration ( UNRRA ), the Lutheran World Federation and other groups. The Estonian astronomer Ernst Öpik became its first rector, the second of the Lithuanian archaeologist Jonas Puzinas ( 1905-1978 ). Since many of the staff and students had found accommodation in other countries, the university was closed in September 1949.

A total of 76 students received their diploma. 53 of them were Latvians, Lithuanians and 16 7 Estonians. Many others completed their studies at other universities.

The university had about 170 professors and 1,200 students in eight faculties and 13 departments.
