Baltic Way

The Baltic Way ( Lithuanian Baltijos kelias, Latvian Baltijas ceļš, Estonian Balti kett ) was a 650 km ( according to other sources 595 miles) long human chain in the Baltic States on 23 August 1989.

Occasion

50 years after the Hitler -Stalin pact, according to which and Secret Additional Protocol of Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania fell to the Soviet Union, came together over one million Estonians, Latvians and Lithuanians in the three countries to a human chain to their unity in the urge to demonstrate for freedom and independence from the Soviet Union. The human chain stretched from Vilnius in Lithuania Riga in Latvia to Tallinn in Estonia. It was the largest human chain in history.

Memory

The Baltic Way was thought on the part of States with monuments and commemorative coins. In addition, documents were taken to the Baltic Way 2009 the World Documentary Heritage by UNESCO.
