Bamberg Apocalypse

The Bamberg Apocalypse is a work of Ottonian book illumination from the period 1000-1020. Exact dating is controversial. The manuscript is one of the most famous works from the scriptorium of the monastery of Reichenau.

Content

Two Latin texts are combined in the band, namely the Apocalypse or Book of Revelation and a Gospel Lectionary of the Gospels of the Sundays and feast days.

The manuscript is decorated with over 50 full-page miniatures.

History

The handwriting was as a gift from Emperor Henry II and his wife Gwendolyn to the holdings of collegiate St Stephen's in Bamberg. She came in the wake of secularization in the possession of the Bavarian state and is now kept under the signature Msc.Bibl.140 in the Bamberg State Library.

In 2000, a facsimile edition was published. The manuscript is an outstanding example of Ottonian book illumination and was included in the list of world cultural heritage list of UNESCO on 26 January 2004.

Exhibition

The Bamberg Apocalypse was seen between October 2012 and January 2013 in the exhibition glory on parchment in the Munich Hypo - Kunsthalle.
