The Banco di Sardegna SpA is an Italian universal bank whose field of activity is mainly in the region of Sardinia. It has its registered office in Cagliari and its administrative headquarters in Sassari. The Banco di Sardegna has a total of around 390 branches, of which 360 are located in Sardinia, and employs more than 3300 employees.

The financial institution was established in 1955 with the purpose to operate the savings and loan business for the Sardinian economy. In 1992, the hitherto conducted in the form of a public law institution institute was transformed and privatized in a corporation. As the owner of the private sector Fondazione Banco di Sardegna was created. The following year, the Banco di Sardegna took over the Banca di Sassari.

In 2000, the Fondazione Banco di Sardegna came from the majority of shares in Banco di Sardegna to the Banca Popolare of Emilia Romagna. This has since held 51 percent of the ordinary shares, the remaining 49 percent still holds the Foundation. The preferred stock shares of Banco di Sardegna, which account for 12.75 percent of total shares are listed on the Italian Stock Exchange.
