Banjarmasin is the capital of the province of South Kalimantan, Indonesia, with approximately 560,000 inhabitants ( 2005). The city is located on a delta island near the mouth of the Barito rivers and Martapura. Therefore, Banjarmasin is also called the " River City ", or " River City ".

Banjarmasin has an important deepwater port, are exported from which pepper, coal, petroleum products, gold, diamonds, etc.. There are also coal mines and oil refineries in the city environment. The city is regularly hit and flooded by high waters.

The city is the seat of the State University Lambung Mangkurat ( Universitas Lambung Mangkurat, UNLAM ).

History

In the 14th century Banjarmasin was part of the Hindu kingdom of Majapahit, later the kingdom was conquered by Muslims. The Dutch began their trade in 1606. Thereafter, the British took control of the city for some time, and in 1787 the city until the independence of Indonesia was a Dutch protectorate.
