Bank of Athens

The Banque d' Athénes was a commercial bank founded in 1893 with headquarters in Athens, the second largest bank in Greece was taken up in 1962 by the National Bank of Greece.

History

The bank was founded in 1893 and one year later its operation. Within a few years a branch network was built, which was supplemented by offices in centers of the Greek diaspora. 1906 a majority stake in Bank of Credit Professionals ( Τράπεζα Επαγγελματικής Πίστεως ) founded in 1873 was acquired.

During the occupation, the bank was placed under the receivership of Dresdner Bank.

In 1953, the branches were compared with those of the National Bank of Greece merged in Egypt and managed as National Bank of Greece and Athens, 1960, all foreign banks in Egypt were nationalized. Until 1962, the Bank of the National Bank of Greece was taken over, the former headquarters is in use today by the NBA, the branch in Thessaloniki today houses the Jewish Museum.

Start as a spin-off from the NBG Group

With the liberalization of the Greek banking market, the NBA sold the subsidiary Bank of Credit Professionals ( Τράπεζα Επαγγελματικής Πίστεως ) and renamed it Bank of Athens. This bank was later taken over and broken up by the Euro bank EFG.
