Baqueira-Beret

Baqueira -Beret is a ski resort in the heart of the Spanish Pyrenees and belongs to the Catalan province of Lleida. The altitude of the area is 1500-2510 meters at Cap de Baqueira.

Description

Baqueira- Beret is to Grandvalira (Andorra ) is the second largest ski area in the Pyrenees and the largest in all of Spain. It is situated in the upper valley portions of the Val d' Aran (Naut Aran ) and the Pallars Sobirà ( Valls d' Àneu ). The ski slopes are generous and open plan and partly surrounded by forest.

The ski area is divided into three different areas: Baqueira, Beret and Bonaigua. Thanks to their alignment in the west ( Atlantic) The ski resort of Baqueira -Beret offers the entire winter season with good snow conditions and ideal skiing conditions. The slopes contribute with more than 1000 m height difference and an impressive overall length means that Baqueira-Beret is one of Spain's best ski resorts. The Spanish King Juan Carlos visited this resort regularly.

Both the places in Val d' Aran and those of the Pallars sobria are of outstanding natural beauty and comprise more than 50 small villages with their typical houses made of stone and wood and very old Romanesque churches.

The development of Baqueira began in the 1960s on the initiative of the local authorities of the Val d' Aran out. A small group of people led by Jorge Jordana de Pozas and Luis Arias founded the ski station in the village of Naut Aran for the good snow conditions in the area.

Today Baqueira-Beret, with its more than 100 km of slopes of one of the largest and most popular ski areas in the Iberian Peninsula. Currently, there are plans to expand the territory towards Pallars Sobirà, but which encounter resistance from environmentalists.
