Barbara Guest

Barbara Guest ( born September 6, 1920 in North Carolina; † 15 February 2006; born Barbara Ann Pinson ) was an American poet, writer and art critic who is often associated with the New York School.

She was born in North Carolina and grew up in California. Guest graduated from the University of California at Berkeley and graduated there in 1943 with a BA from. She lived a long time in New York, where she belonged to Frank O'Hara, John Ashbery, James Schuyler and Kenneth Koch to the poets of the New York School. It is also known as the author of a biography of the poet HD, Herself Defined: The Poet HD and Her World ( 1984). She was awarded by the Poetry Society of America with the Frost Medal for Lifetime Achievement in 1999. Most recently, she lived again in Berkeley, where she died in 2006.
