Barcelona Cathedral

La Catedral de Santa Creu i Santa Eulalia is a Gothic Cathedral in Barcelona and Metropolitan Church of the Archdiocese of Barcelona. It is located at Place de la Seu planning in the district of Barri Gòtic and the Holy Eulalia consecrated.

Architectural History

There was already a Roman temple on the site of the cathedral. The first predecessor church on this site came from the 6th century, it was 985 destroyed. The basilica in Romanesque style was inaugurated in 1058.

The foundation stone was laid on May 5, 1298 the completion of 1448th The bell tower was added in 1500. The façade was added in the years 1887-1898 according to the design of architect August Font and Josep Oriol Mestres; they used older designs of Charles Galters from 1408.

The central tower was built from 1906 to 1913.

Portals

The main portal was created by Bartolomé Ordóñez and Pedro Villar.

The Portal de San Ivo is located in the northeast facade of the church. Construction work on it began in 1298 at, some components were carried over from previous Romanesque and come from the 12th century.

The Portal de Santa Eulalia is located in the west of the monastery em space and includes a copy of the figure of the saint, which was created in the 15th century.

The Portal de la Pietat leads to the monastery square and is located in the south of the ensemble. Some figures are attributed to the sculptor Michael Lochner († 1490 ).

Parts of the portal between the church and the cloister are from the 11th century.

Choir stalls

The choir is from the year 1399 and is the work of originating from Flanders Pere Ça Anglada. It was later decorated with the arms of the Knights of the Order of the Golden Fleece. There was in 1519 the only meeting of the Order outside of Flanders instead.

Crypt

In built in 1329 crypt is the grave of the revered since 405 as a martyr Santa Eulalia. You should have lived in the Sarria district and had been tortured as a Christian at the age of 13 years to 290 under Emperor Diocletian and murdered. Your martyr acts, however, are fake and are similar to those of the Holy Eulalia of Mérida († December 10 304 in Mérida ). The relics were to the 14th century in the church of Santa Maria del Mar.

Organ

The organ was built by the organ builder Orgues Blanca Fort ( Montserrat ) 1994. The instrument is housed in a historic organ case with historical organ case dating back to 1538. The organ has 58 registers ( 4,013 pipes ) on four manuals ( Cadireta = Rückpositiv, Organo Mayor = major work, Expressiu = Swell, Eco = echo chamber, Batalla = Trompeteria ) and pedal.
